The Red Sox won the World Series in 2017 with young home grown talents like Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr and Rafael Devers plus high priced free agents like David Price and JD Martinez. They also acquired their ace starting pitcher, Chris Sale for Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, and Luis Alexander Basabe and their closer, Craig Kimbrel for Logan Allen and Manny Margot.
The Red Sox farm system is presently toward the bottom of major league rankings and not many of the best prospects that the Red Sox do have figure to be on Salem in 2019. There are a few prospects like Tristan Casas and Jay Groome that could make it to Salem at the end of the year, But 2020 seems more likely. Danny Diaz, Gilberto Jimenez and Brayan Bello have not played enough stateside to be included.

A 19 year old that has a 3.50 in High A is typically something to get excited about. However, Mata's 58 walks in 72 innings is a huge red flag. There are a lot of people that would like to use the scale that has Mata at 160 pounds. Mata weight quite a bit more now and is actually quite husky which may have contributed to his back injury that limited Mata to one appearance after July 10th.

The Red Sox may have struck pay dirt with their 7th round in the 2018 draft. Duran was a teammate of Clayton Andrews, the Brewers 17th round draft choice that was also very successful in full season ball. Duran was a 2nd basemen that the Red Sox have moved to the outfielder. Duran hit .348/.398/.941 in 37 games at Lowell in the NY Penn League and .367/.396/ .872 in 30 games with Greenville in the Sally League with as total of 24 steals. Duran has not previously displayed much power despite decent size. He did have 28 extra base hits in 67 games as a pro.

Reyes has been very successful at every level he has pitched. He is a control pitcher rather than a hard thrower. In 2018 Reyes was the Sally League pitcher of the year where is only walked 13 and gave up 92 hits in 123 innings. Reyes was promoted to Salem for 6 starts at the end of the year with decent success. Reyes is a righted handed Dominican version of the Frederick Keys left handed Australian, Alex Wells. As both Reyes and Wells move up the margin of error shrinks for the soft tossers.

Campana played the entire 2018 season as a 20 year for Greenville. He has shown good power (16 homers, 42 extra base hits), but the rest of his game is questionable. Campana is going to have to show an improved hit tool to be successful at high levels. He is already limited to corner outfielder.

Crawford had a solid season in Greenville in 2018 after being the 491st pick in the 2017 from Florida Gulf Coast where a guy named Chris Sale went to school. Crawford was promoted to Salem with Denyi Reyes in August and made six starts for Salem with good success. Appropriately the cutter is his best pitch.

In 2018 the Greenville Drive had a trio of work horse starting pitchers that were very successful in the Sally League with Diaz, Reyes and Crawford. None of the three have particularly high upsides (5th starter at best) but their productivity deserves a mention as a prospect. Diaz repeated Greenville in 2018 and except for one start with Salem in June, spent the entire year in the Sally League. Diaz is a lefty with a sinking fastball that results of ground outs.

Baldwin is a catcher that has had a very hard time staying healthy. He had a outstanding offensive year with Greenville in 2017 with 14 homers in 95 games and a .800 OPS. In between four trips to the disabled list in 2018, Baldwin played 53 games for Salem, never really getting on track. If Baldwin is able to stay healthy and stick at catcher, he could be an interesting prospect.

Schellenger is a power throwing relief only prospect out of Seton Hall that has had a hard time staying on the field. In 19 innings as a pro, Schellenger had 29 strikeouts and held hitters to a .152 batting average. Reportedly threw as fast as 100 MPH in college, but has not thrown as hard as a pro. Schellenger ended 2018 healthy so hopefully he is a full go for 2019 and could move quickly.
Future Carolina League Prospects
Triston Casas (3B) - The Red Sox first round draft pick in 2018, Casas only played two games before injuring his thumb and missing the rest of the season. Casas just turned 19 in January and is a power hitting prospect who may eventually need to move to first base.
Jay Groome (P) - The Red Sox 2016 first round draft pick, the 6'6" left handed Groome looked like he was going to be a big time propsect. However, Groome never seemed right in 2017 and ended up having Tommy john surgery in May of 2018. He should be back on the mound around mid season.
Nick Decker (OF) - The Red Sox 2nd round draft pick in 2018, like Triston Casas, the left handed Decker's season was cut short after only two games due to an injury. A cold weather prep player.
Brandon Howlett (3B) - The Red Sox 21st round pick in 2018, Howlett had a disappointing high school senior season which caused his draft value to fall. The Red Sox figured out that he was having a issue with his contact lenses and hit much better as a pro with the correct contact lenses.
Nick Northcutt (3B) - Another late round high school 3rd basemen from the 2018 draft that looks like he has potential. The Red Sox picked Northcutt in the 11th round and paid him a 3rd round bonus.
Alex Scherf (P) - Scherf was the 2017 Gatorade Texas High School Player of the Year but was not picked until the 5th round due to signability concerns and the Red Sox went well over slot to sign Scherf. He had a up and down season for Greenville. Scherf could be promoted to Salem in 2019 if he shows improvement in Greenville.
Yoan Aybar (RP) - The Red Sox signed the lefthanded Aybar as an outfielder for $450,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2013. In 2017 Aybar made it to Greenville for 30 games where he had an OPS of .406. The Red Sox converted Aybar to a relief pitcher in 2018 and he obviously is raw but throws very hard. Aybar is still only 21.
