Fayetteville Woodpeckers 2019 Prospect Preview

The Carolina Champion Astros are moving about 45 minutes from Buies Creek where they played at Campbell University to Fayetteville where they will be playing in their own brand new park, Segra Stadium and be known as the Woodpeckers.   The Astros organization is clicking on all cylinders.  The farm system is deep and well rounded.  They are excelling at drafting and player development. The focus on spin rate and short starts or multi-inning relieving for pitchers seem to especially pay dividends in 2018.

Chances of being in the Carolina League
Likely to begin the season in Fayetteville, could move up quickly to Corpus Christi with a good start.

Beer won the Dick Howser Trophy as the national college baseball player of the year as a Freshman at Clemson in 2016. Beer was not quite as good as a Sophomore or Junior, but still very productive. The Astros took Beer with the 28th overall pick and he was very good, getting all the way up to Buies Creek.  Beer can hit, the question is going to be his defense. Like Yordan Alvarez, Beer profiles as a limited range leftfielder or DH / 1B type.

Chances of being in the Carolina League
 Likely but could move quickly

Heading into 2018, Abreu had an undistinguished track record including a 7.98 era in 2017 with Greeneville in the Appalachian League.  Abreu was one of the most improved pitchers in the minors in 2018 with 90 strikeouts in 54 innings with Tri Cities in the NY York Penn League and Quad Cities in the Midwest League.  The Astros were impressed enough to put Abreu on their 40 man roster rather than risk losing him in the Rule V draft.  Abreu was a very trendy pick up in deep dynasty leagues this off season.

Chances of being in the Carolina League
Expect to begin in Fayetteville but could be promoted to Corpus Christi quickly if he starts out like he ended 2018.

Solomon was primarily a reliever at Notre Dame and only threw an inning as a pro in 2017  In 2018 he was a sometime starters, sometime multi-inning reliever that was outstanding in 77 innings in Quad Cities and finished the year with 23 impressive innings in Buies Creek.  At Notre Dame, Solomon walked 28 in 54 innings in 2017.  In 2018, Solomon walked 32 in 100 innings.

Very good

Arauz clearly needs to add strength at 150 pounds.  He had a strong 54 games stint in 2018 at Quad Cities earning a promotion to Buies Creeks.  At Buies Creeks, Arauz was overmatched.  However, he is a year older and hopefully stronger.  He is a switch hitter that can play all over the infield.

Either Fayetteville or Corpus Christi

Paredes signed for $10,000 as a 19 year old, but the slightly built righthander has been very productive as a mostly multi inning reliever with occasional starts. Paredes got off to a good start with Quad Cities in 2017 but his season was cut short by an elbow injury.  In 2018 he was even better, earning a promotion to Buies Creek for the last part of the season and did not miss a beat in helping the Astros win the Carolina Championship.  For the 2018 season, Paredes held hitters to a.141 batting average and struck out 90 in 69 innings.

May start in Quad Cities but should get to Fayetteville by the second half.

McKenna does not do anything great, but does everything well. He was the Big West player of the year in 2018 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and had a smooth transition to pro ball including 12 games in Quad Cities.

Name

Chances of being in the Carolina League
Likely to begin the season with Quad Cities, but could be promoted to Fayetteville if he is productive

A 12th round draft pick by the Mets in 2018 out of Toledo University, Adolph has sleeper potential.  Adolph emerged during his Junior season and got his pro career of to a strong start for Brooklyn in the New York Penn League.  He has a good combination of power and speed.   Acquiring Adolph and Luis Santana for JD Davis, a player the Astros did not need, may turn out to be as steal.

Future Carolina League Prospects

Freudis Nova (INF) -One of the stars of the 2016 international class, Nova ended up with the Astros after failing a drug test.  Just turned 19 in January.

Jayson Schroeder (P) - He was the Astros 2nd round pick in the 2018 draft out of high school in Washington and pitched 18 innings in the GCL.  He turned 19 in November.

Jairo Solis (P)- Solis was very good for an 18 year in full season ball for Quad Cities in 2018 and would have been a 2019 Carolina Prospect if he had not injured his arm and had Tommy John surgery.

Luis Santana (SS) - Acquired from the Mets in January as part of the JD Davis trade, Santana had an excellent year in the NY Penn League in 2018 (.348 / 446 / .917) and should begin the year as a 19 year old in full season with Quad Cities.

Deury Carrasco (SS)- A speedster, stole 17 bases in 38 games in the GCL.  He turned 19 in September.

Heitor Tokar (P)- A 6'7" pitch from Brazil who turned 18 in October.  Tokar had a strong season in the DSL and will make his stateside debut in 2019.

Joe Perez (3B) - A 2017 2nd round draft pick out of high school that have barely played as a pro as a result of Tommy John surgery that should be ready to go in 2019.

Jeremy Pena (SS) - A defensive first shortstop that the Astros took in the 3rd round of the 2018 draft.   Unusual to see a cold weathered high school draftee assigned directly to the NY Penn League.
